Green ARCTIC

Our responsibility to protect the environment and our obligation to use energy and environmental resources sparingly are things we take very seriously. ARCTIC has been a 100% carbon neutral company since 2011. We fully offset our greenhouse gas emissions by investing in renewable energies and recycling. We think “green” and act accordingly, because it is only natural for us to treasure something that‘s more important than any product - the environment.

Optimised Packaging and Online Manuals

All of our product packaging is designed to minimise CO2 emissions. Our designers create packaging that is slim, compact, lightweight and protective. That allows us to reduce packaging material and waste to a minimum. The reduced packing material, along with factoring pallet and container dimensions into the design process, helps us to reduce shipping volume by 25%. Since 2011 we have more than halved the fuel consumption for the transportation of our products.

In addition to continuously optimising our product packaging, we are always looking for new ways to fulfill our responsibility to the environment. For this reason, we have largely dispensed with printed operating instructions since 2018, instead making them available online in multiple languages.

VERSATILE AND SUSTAINABLE ENGAGEMENT

We not only take responsibility ourselves, we are also proud of our contribution to supporting various sustainability projects around the world. Here is a selection of the programs we support. In addition to demonstrating a strong committment to the enviroment and to climate protection, these programs create jobs locally and raise awareness of environmental issues.

From Waste to Resource

Waste doesn't necessarily have to become garbage. That‘s why we support the co-firing project in Thailand, which converts agricultural waste from the region into energy. The project creates jobs and additional income for rural communities. It's also a real win for the environment!

Considerable carbon emissions are a byproduct of local cement production. Thanks to the "biochar" project in Thailand, fossil fuels such as coal and heavy oils have been partially replaced with renewable fuels such as wood and rice husks.

UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF HYDROPOWER

Indonesia has great potential for hydropower. ARCTIC supports the "Small Hydro Power Plant" project so that this natural resource can be used more for energy generation. The small run-of-river power plant, which uses the natural slope of the river and does not need a dam, produces sustainable energy for the island of Sulawesi.

In addition to contributing to climate protection, the project also improves the social and ecological situation in the region. Trees were planted upstream of the power plant to stabilize the river banks, reduce erosion and improve the water absorption capacity of the soil, thereby ensuring the local water supply. In addition, new employment opportunities were created for the local population.

MAKING STRIDES IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT

Installing the wastewater treatment in a starch factory 200 km northeast of Bangkok has made it possible to significantly improve the local air and water quality. The starch is obtained from cassava roots, the main agricultural product of the region.

The starch factory was able to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by 80%. Captured methane is used as a substitute for fossil fuels to generate heat with which to dry the starch. In this way, climate-warming methane is retained while at the same time, tons of fossil fuels are saved. A double contribution to climate protection.

HARNESSING HYDRO AND WIND POWER FOR CLEAN ENERGY PRODUCTION

The hydropower plant built in southwestern China with our subsidies holds water in a pressure pipe and generates electricity without any dam due to the height difference. A reduction in air pollution is achieved by replacing other power generation methods such as CO2-intensive coal-fired power plants reached. The project leads to a reduction of 700.000 t CO2.

The wind energy project we supported in the northwest Hebei Province, in northern China, created 33 wind turbines. The total output of the wind farm is 50 MW, 115.000 MWh (net) and can be fed into the power grid per year.
